Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani creates two-way MLB history, shines on Cy Young night originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Los Angeles Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani nearly did it all Wednesday night, while creating MLB history.
As the starting pitcher, the four-time MVP blanked the host Arizona Diamondbacks through six innings, yielding just two hits and walking one batter. As the lead-off batter, Ohtani produced three singles and drew two bases on balls, becoming the first hurler in the modern era to reach base five times and yield fewer than five base runners.
Highlighting a night where four of the top NL Cy Young award candidates competed, Ohtani (6-2) displayed his two-way prowess during the 7-0 victory at Chase Field.
During the expansion era, only two pitchers have reached base five times during a start: Ohtani, who has done it twice, and former pitcher Mel Stottlemyre.
NL Cy Young candidates go to work
Here is a look at how the four Cy Young award candidates fared Wednesday:
- Philadelphia Phillies' Cristopher Sanchez (7-2) may have had his scoreless streak snapped at 50.2 innings, but he earned the win, a 3-2 decision over the San Diego Padres at Citizens Bank Park. Sanchez's effort ranked third-longest since at least 1920.
- Pittsburgh Pirates' Paul Skenes (6-5) failed to escape the fifth inning of an 11-9 loss to the Houston Astros at Daikin Park. He allowed three earned runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings. His ERA rose to 3.09 during the no-decision.
- Cincinnati Reds' Chase Burns (7-1) yielded a two-run, first-inning home run to Kansas City's Vinnie Pasquantino, but followed it up with five straight scoreless innings, finishing with nine strikeouts during the 5-2 defeat. Burns' ERA dipped to 2.05.
Ohtani finished his outing with six strikeouts and lowered his ERA to 0.74, while creating MLB history on a night when the stars were out.
