Edwin Díaz of the Los Angeles Dodgers has missed much of the year after elbow surgery, but he’s nearing a return to the big leagues.
Díaz made his first rehab appearance in Triple-A on Wednesday, and given that timeline, there’s a chance that he could return to the Dodgers in less than a week, as reported by Katie Woo of The Athletic.
Díaz will complete that back-to-back on Thursday, leaving perhaps only one more outing in the minors before he’s back to MLB.
“He’ll make one more rehab start after that over the weekend (likely Sat). There is a chance both Díaz and Kiké Hernández are active to kick off the next homestand (7/28),” Woo wrote.
One of the two biggest offseason acquisitions for the Dodgers, Díaz started the season with much fanfare, including his trademark trumpets.

A few weeks into the season, though, Díaz was diagnosed with having loose bodies in his throwing elbow, forcing a move to the injured list.
After months of recovery, Díaz is getting ready to finally get back to the big leagues and show why the Dodgers signed him to a three-year, $69 million deal.
LA Sports Report’s Nelson Espinal recently covered Díaz’s outing with the Single-A Ontario Tower Buzzers, and Díaz told him that the “loose bodies” were five bone chips.
Now, though, he’s ready to pitch hard again, and his velocity has risen as a result.
“I think my velo[city] will keep improving. I feel good right now,” Díaz told Espinal. “Before I think I had a little bit of a problem trying to throw hard because I had five bone chips in my elbow. I’m cleaned up now and I threw 98. I could not have thrown 98 earlier in the season so I’m going in the right direction.”
Dodgers Nation’s Aaron Coloma made the case that Díaz’s return could have a huge effect on the team, especially given all of the injuries to the pitching corps.
“When fully healthy, though, Diaz is a force to be reckoned with, and has already shown glimpses of his best self with the Dodgers,” Coloma said. “LA will hope he can return to his form from the beginning of the season as they aim to be the first NL team to three-peat.”
