Edwin Díaz is taking a huge step towards returning to the Los Angeles Dodgers from the injured list. The right-handed closer is beginning a rehab assignment with Single-A Ontario on Saturday and will pitch out of the bullpen for the Town Buzzers.
The Town Buzzers announced the news on social media a few hours before their game at 6:05 pm PT.
Díaz has been out since April 20 with loose bodies in his right elbow. He underwent surgery two days later to remove those loose bodies and his been recovering ever since. He was ruled out until at least the second half of the season.
On Sunday, Díaz threw his first live batting practice since undergoing surgery before the Dodgers’ series finale against the San Diego Padres. He faced Alex Freeland and Kiké Hernández.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters Díaz is on track to return from the IL shortly after the All-Star break. His return to the bullpen will be a big boost for the Dodgers for the second half of the season.

Díaz signed a three-year, $69 million contract with the Dodgers in free agency this offseason. He and outfielder Kyle Tucker were two huge free agent additions for Los Angeles and two of the biggest across MLB.
Before landing on the IL, the two-time National League Reliever of the Year held teams to one run or less in five of his seven outings. He also struck out 10 batters and converted four of his five save opportunities in seven appearances.
