Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts revealed why the Dodgers optioned right-hander Kyle Hurt to Triple-A on Wednesday.

Per the California Post’s Jack Harris, Roberts said Hurt was sent down so he can build a “foundation” following his return from an extended injured list stint due to Tommy John surgery. He also said they want more “tread on his tires” at the moment, but expect him to feature in MLB this season.

Hurt missed almost all of the 2025 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, making just seven rehab appearances before the end of the season. He had a 1.93 ERA through seven appearances, allowing just two runs through 9.1 innings pitched. He also struck out 10 batters during that stretch.

The 27-year-old right-hander has four MLB appearances under his belt, and has performed well when the Dodgers have called on him. His debut came in 2023, and he threw two perfect innings during his sole appearance that year. He appeared three times in 2024, allowing a single earned run through 6.2 innings pitched.

Hurt played well during spring training for the Dodgers this season as well, throwing 7.1 innings in seven appearances. He kept his opponents scoreless in five of his seven appearances, and allowed just three earned runs throughout the duration of his time in the Cactus League.

What Steps Does Kyle Hurt Need to Take to Make it Back to MLB?

While the Dodgers seem to want Hurt to get some competitive innings under his belt, the right-hander has been taking some steps to become better by his own volition this spring. While in big league camp, he took every opportunity to learn from his peers.

“It’s just super exciting to be in this locker room, like just watching Yoshi do everything he does on a day-to-day basis and like how Blake Snell goes about it,” Hurt said. “Everyone just kind of does it their own way and we just feed off each other. A lot of these young guys are definitely, including myself, we still see what these guys do, but it’s just exciting just watching the day-by-day routine. That’s one big thing for me.”

He also has some goals laid out for himself, the most important of which is staying off the injured list — a problem he’s often encountered in his professional career.

“I want to say just stay healthy [is goal No. 1], but just throw strike one,” he said. “That’s a good goal and I feel like if I do that, then I’ll be successful.”
