Wednesday was a rough day for some of the top seeds in the first round of the state Division I baseball tournament.
As top seed Trinity rested with the division’s only first-round bye, No. 2 Pinkerton Academy, No. 3 Bedford and No. 4 Dover all fell. The upsets set the stage for a quarterfinal Saturday featuring some underdogs looking to continue their winnings ways.
No. 8 Goffstown 2, No. 9 Winnacunnet 0
At Saint Anselm College, Grizzlies right-hander Owen Hazelbaker pitched a three-hitter with seven strikeouts against the 2025 state runners-up. P.J. Casey collected two hits for Goffstown, which advanced to play top seed Trinity on Saturday.
No. 14 Spaulding 5, No. 3 Bedford 1
In Bedford, the Red Raiders’ Hunter Spencer pitched a five-hitter with one walk. The visitors scored three runs in the fourth and added two more in the seventh.
Bedford’S Zack Papik pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing four hits. The Bulldogs scored their run in the first inning when Jason Topf hit a leadoff triple and later came around to score.
No. 6, Londonderry 5, No. 11 Nashua So. 2
In Londonderry, the Lancers’ Collin Philcrantz pitched an eight-hitter with no walks. Londonderry, led offensively by Jaylen Stott, will host Spaulding in a quarterfinal on Saturday.
No. 5 Bishop Guertin 12, No. 12 Windham 2 (5 innings)
In Nashua, Ben Geiger pitched all five innings of the five-inning game, limiting the Jaguars to five hits and two runs. He walked none and fanned nine.
BG’s Nick Wyner had a big day at the plate with a double and two singles. He also scored three runs and knocked in three.
Josh Martino took the loss for Windham.
BG will host No. 13 Timberlane, an 8-3 upset winner of No. 4 Dover, in Saturday’s quarterfinals (1 p.m. at Holman Stadium).
