EAST LANSING – Divine Ugochukwu’s first season with Michigan State basketball is over.
The transfer combo guard will undergo surgery next week on his injured left foot, coach Tom Izzo said Friday, Feb. 6. Ugochukwu suffered the injury in the first half of the Spartans’ 76-73 loss Wednesday night at Minnesota.
No. 10 MSU (19-4, 9-3 Big Ten) hosts league-leading No. 6 Illinois (20-3, 11-1) on Saturday. Tipoff is 8 p.m. at Breslin Center (Fox).
Ugochukwu, a 6-foot-3 transfer from Miami (Florida), averaged 5.1 points and shot 44.2% from 3-point range in 22 games with the Spartans this season, which included 12 starts. He got his first start of the year against Penn State on Dec. 13 and went off, scoring 23 points on 8-for-10 shooting to help the Spartans narrowly avoid an upset.
He started the next 11 games after that while also serving as the primary backup to Jeremy Fears Jr. and also hit a clutch game-tying shot against Rutgers on Jan. 27 before being replaced in the starting lineup by freshman Jordan Scott against Minnesota.
WHERE DO YOU GO FROM HERE? MSU basketball's Divine Ugochukwu injury adds to Tom Izzo's concerns
His injury leaves MSU with just Fears and Harvard transfer Denham Wojcik as Izzo’s two remaining point guards.
Izzo said he may need to use the rest of his guards in different manners to navigate the loss of Ugochukwu, adding that the injury will give more opportunities for freshman Jordan Scott and senior transfer Trey Fort.
Ugochukwu is the second offseason transfer addition to suffer a season-ending injury. Forward Kaleb Glenn is back to practicing but will take a redshirt season to continue healing, Izzo reaffirmed Friday.
