BCIAA champion Kutztown opens play Monday in the District 3 Class 3A softball tournament as the second seed.

The Cougars are one of eight Berks teams to make the tournament, with Tulpehocken and Schuylkill Valley joining Kutztown in the eight-team 3A bracket.

Also in the tournament are Wilson (6A), Exeter (5A), Twin Valley (5A), Fleetwood (4A) and Hamburg (4A).

Again this year, Kutztown (16-4) is seeded behind top-seed Susquenita (19-1). Last year, Susquenita beat Kutztown 2-0 for the district title.

The Cougars host seventh-seeded Biglerville (14-6) at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Kutztown Park. Susquenita hosts eighth-seeded Tulpehocken (13-7) at 4:30 p.m. Schuylkill Valley (16-4) is seeded sixth and travels to third-seeded Littlestown (17-3) for a 4:30 p.m. game.

Wilson, which lost to Kutztown 11-8 in the BCIAA title game, is the third seed in 6A and hosts Manheim Township at 4:30 p.m. Monday in a first round game. The Bulldogs are 17-3 and Manheim Township is 7-13.

Twin Valley, seeded 10th, and Exeter, 13th seed, are both on the road Monday. The Raiders (15-4) are at seventh-seeded Lampeter Strasburg, and the Eagles (12-8) are at No. 4 Red Land (18-2).

In the eight-team 4A tourney, one Berks team is guaranteed to advance to the semifinals because Fleetwood and Hamburg meet in Monday’s quarterfinals.

The fifth-seeded Hawks are 15-5 and the fourth-seeded Tigers are 16-3. The game is at 7 p.m. at Lyons Field.
