If you're going to go down, you might as well go down swinging. It didn't take Dillon Brooks long to apply that mindset as the Phoenix Suns secured a Round 1 date with the Oklahoma City Thunder after their play-in tournament win over the Golden State Warriors.
The Thunder have overwhelming odds to come away with the Round 1 series win. It'll take a Herculean effort for things to change course. While the rational basketball fan can reasonably view this as a quick series, the Suns can't. If you won't believe in yourself, nobody else will.
That's why Brooks' postgame comments with the Amazon Prime crew shouldn't be a shocker. He's never been afraid to show his true emotions on his sleeve. In fact, his bluntness and irrational confidence are the two intangibles for why he's able to carve out a 99th percentile NBA career as a late 2017 second-round pick.
The Thunder have everything in their favor, but that doesn't mean the Suns will just lie down. In fact, Brooks is calling his shot — Babe Ruth style. He believes his squad will walk into OKC and steal Game 1. If that happens, it completely changes the dynamics of the series.
"It's about believing what we do every single day. Our principles, base and foundation. Just play hard each and every single possession. Value each and every single possession," Brooks said. "I believe in my guys against anybody in the NBA. We're going to go out there and steal Game 1."
Love it. This is what the NBA playoffs are about. Brooks is speedrunning his way through the OKC villain arc. Being a pest to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the next step. Those two know each other very well, considering they're Team Canada teammates during international play like the Olympics and FIBA World Cup.
Brooks' cockiness might anger the Thunder, but you gotta absolutely love it if you're the Suns. It's the type of confidence boost they'll desperately need if they want to do the unthinkable. He's enjoyed a career season in Phoenix as a 20.2-point scorer. Phoenix doesn't possess the same talent level, but it could muddy up the games with its hard-nosed playstyle.
