I was totally put off by the trailer because it came across to me as trying waaay too hard to be "satirical." And the advanced word that this was going to be Tom Cruise's "knock it out of the park Oscar winning role" also made me frown because I hate Oscar chasing roles by big "star" actors.
Well, saw it today and I actually thought it was absolutely great. Forget the bad reviews. They just prove how easily anything offbeat in cinema goes flying over most mainstream reviewers' heads. It's not without flaws (pacing, mostly) but it's also deceptively clever in its approach.
People expecting the "zany hilarity" the trailer promised will be disappointed. It has some funny stuff, but it's not really that kind of comedy. It's really more thought provoking and self aware than you might expect. And Tom Cruise does actually give a terrific performance, with a couple of genuinely great scenes.
It's too bad a lot of ignorant critics are crapping on it. It's one of those "flops" that will undoubtedly gain in stature as the years go on.
