You know the cliche- "those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it." At first glance, it may not seem like Johnny Manziel would be the best NFL Draft mentor for former Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia.
After all, "Johnny Football" is right up there with Ryan Leaf, Tim Couch, Heath Shuler, Blaine Gabbert, Trey Lance, Andre Ware, Akili Smith, Joey Harrington, Jamarcus Russell and Rick Mirer (who ended up doing well socioeconomically in his life after football) as some of the biggest quarterback draft busts of this generation.
Leaf, to his credit, is incredibly self-aware of that designation and certainly found his way in life, and became a positive role model afterward, in spite of it.
But maybe Manziel mentoring Pavia is a good thing because he could serve as a great cautionary tale?
He can definitely show him what NOT to do. After all, Pavia has the same two main question marks, immaturity and size that plagued Manziel in his predraft process.
At times, Manziel did not present the type of public image that you would want in a franchise quarterback, in the lead up to the draft. Even on draft night itself, Manziel came off as immature and not ready for the responsibility ahead of him.
While being taller and bigger might have helped Manziel significantly, his biggest issue was most likely in between the ears.
Right now, the Pavia critics are saying similar things of this past season's Heisman runner-up. There is no doubt that he can play, but is he ready mentally and psychologically?
He's certainly not doing himself any favors with some of the words that he sometimes chooses in interviews and on social media.
However, maybe he can learn from Manziel's mistakes? What a great redemption story that would be for Manziel, to see his mentee thrive and succeed.
