France’s disappointing World Cup semifinals defeat to Spain has brought the boo birds out of the woodwork. Les Bleus’ star-studded attack failed to shine for once, and players such as Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise were caught in the crosshairs of criticism — despite having enjoyed a brilliant tournament before the loss.
It is all “a bit harsh”, according to France national team coach Didier Deschamps, who took to defending
“He [Olise] wasn’t at his best against Spain, just like some of the others,” Deschamps relayed in comments captured by @iMiaSanMia. “He’s still got plenty of room to improve. Of course he’ll get even better. The big occasion [World Cup semifinal] and the emotional side of it are also a factor.
“But if there’s one player who truly broke through at this World Cup, it’s him. And on top of that, he’s a genuinely great person. He will reach even greater heights. Sometimes things just don’t click, and you also have to give credit to the opponent. I’ll use Dayot Upamecano as an example. Now he’s an absolute monster, but it took him time to get there too.”
It is great to see Olise’s national team coach standing up for him like this. And he surely has Bayern fans and staff in his corner as well.
