Legendary broadcaster and former coach Dick Vitale has been through multiple cancer battles over the years and has won every one of them. Now, he has another health concern.
Vitale announced on Wednesday that after his latest trip to his doctor for tests that included PET and CAT scans and two MRIs, there are “abnormalities” in the results.
Vitale did not go into detail about those “abnormalities,” but he did make it clear that he plans on continuing to fight whatever it is, as he has always bravely done.
“Like countless others, each time I go for any kind of test, I am a nervous wreck,” Vitale said. “The latest example is my scans last week. The anxiousness you feel about the uncertainty is off the charts. You just never know what’s next, and it can be surprising or scary.
“While I feel great physically and sharp mentally, I heard from my doctors that the latest tests [which included a PET scan, then a CAT scan, and then two MRIs] showed some abnormalities.”
“They are recommending some additional testing to determine next steps. I’m hoping for the best, and we will see what the roadmap looks like after an upcoming biopsy,” Vital added.
“As always, I plan to remain as active as ever and fight as hard as can be.”

Vitale has been through what has seemingly been a never-ending battle with different types of cancers over the last handful of years.
He had battles with melanoma, Stage 4 lymphoma and vocal cord cancer, which took a huge toll on his legendary voice for lengthy periods of time.
“There were times I didn’t know if I’d wake up the next morning,” Vitale said of how he felt after one particular chemotherapy session he had that produced troubling results in a past battle. “I remember that night in the hospital, my family left and I cried, thinking I’d never see them again. A nurse came in and said, ‘Dick, what’s wrong? Why are you so upset? You’re going to beat this. You’re a fighter.’ She gave me hope.”
Amid his fights against cancer, Vitale has been a pillar for raising money for those battling the disease.
“You have heard me say it over and over again my friends. This is why I’m OBSESSED with the incredible work of The V Foundation,” he said in his statement on Wednesday. “We need to raise money and bring hope to the millions that are battling and suffering, especially the youngsters.”
The annual Dick Vitale Gala hosted by The V Foundation has raised $105 million for kids battling cancer. This year, the gala will take place on May 1 in Sarasota, Florida.
