The Diamondbacks continue a lengthy stretch of games against postseason-contending teams in the National League.
Left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez gets another chance to build on his All-Star-caliber resume with a start against the Brewers, wrapping up a homestand against the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday, July 5.
Then the Diamondbacks are off to San Diego and Los Angeles to play four games against the Padres and three at Dodger Stadium. The Padres are in wild-card contention while the Dodgers are running away with the National League West.
San Diego has underachieved this season, record-wise, though the Padres are likely where most thought they would be, in second place in the NL West entering play July 1. They were 31-20 on May 23 but lost 10 of their next 11 games and have fallen far behind the Dodgers.
The Padres have not hit too well as a team despite 16 home runs for Manny Machado as of July 1 and a solid batting average for Fernando Tatis Jr.
Right-hander Michael King has been the Padres' most consistent starting pitcher this season.
The Dodgers have not been derailed despite several injures. They led the major leagues runs, hits, team batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and OPS as of games of July 1.
Shohei Ohtani continues to be a catalyst as a hitter and pitcher, the favorite for National League MVP and poised for another All-Star appearance.
Catcher Will Smith remains on the injured list but could be back in time to play Arizona. The timetable is similar for relief pitcher Evan Phillips.
Closer Edwin Diaz is out until late July at the earliest, but his return could coincide with that of starting pitchers Tyler Glasnow and Blake Snell, which will only make Los Angeles more formidable.
Key World Series title pieces Kiké Hernandez and Blake Treinen are also expected off the injured list sometime in July.
Game times in San Diego are 6:40 p.m. July 6-7, 7:10 p.m. on July 8 and 6:40 p.m. on July 9. In L.A., game times are 7:10 p.m. July 10, 6:10 p.m. on July 11 and 1:10 p.m. on July 12.
