Diamondbacks right fielder Corbin Carroll had quite a Friday night, Aug. 7, stealing a home run with an over-the-wall catch against the Dodgers, being honored for his franchise triples record set this season and watching with pride while his girlfriend, Emma Broyles, sang the national anthem before the game.
Carroll said he knew he had taken a home run away from the Dodgers' Tommy Edman when he squeezed the ball in his glove at the top of his leap at the wall.
"Kind of a softer hit and higher ball, so a little more time to get back to the wall and assess," Carroll said. "I was real happy to make the play. That was probably the highest I've gotten on a chance like that."
Carroll said he'd never made a catch over the wall before. He couldn't sense that there were some in the crowd who in the moment were not sure he caught the ball.
With regard to the national anthem, Carroll knew something was up when he was told to be lined up on the left field foul line at 6:20 p.m. for the song. But he didn't know Broyles, the 2022 Miss America, was going to sing.
The two made eye contact as she was about to perform.
"It was like 'all right, let's hear it,'" he said.

Diamondbacks third baseman Nolan Arenado received the 2026 Diamondbacks Heart and Hustle Award in a ceremony held before the game on Saturday, Aug. 9. Arenado is the Diamondbacks recipient of the award that was announced on Friday by the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association.
"Obviously it means a lot. I've never won it before so it's pretty cool," said Arenado, a 15th-year veteran. "It's the dedication to the craft and it's nice to know that my teammates recognize that."
One player from each Major League team is chosen by the MLBPAA committees based on their passion, desire, and work ethic demonstrated both on and off the field. The 2026 overall Heart and Hustle Award winner will be announced in mid-November on MLB Network.
"For him to be that committed every single day, that's voted on by his teammates, by his peers, speaks volumes about why he's been doing it for so long at such a high level," manager Torey Lovullo said. "Well-deserved honor. He does it right, he's very intentional with his day. He's very open about what he's coming to do for this team and his teammates, and everybody picks up on that vibe."

Outfielder Jordan Lawlar (hamstring) played seven innings in the outfield for Double-A Amarillo on Friday, Aug. 7, and was scheduled to serve as the DH on Saturday. Right-handed pitcher Drey Jameson (hip) was scheduled for an outing at the team's Salt River Fields facility on Saturday of one-plus innings, and right-handed reliever Justin Martinez (elbow surgery rehab) threw an inning at Class A Visalia on Friday, 14 pitches in a game and 11 in the bullpen.
Martinez's next stop could be Triple-A Reno for game work, manager Torey Lovullo said.

Diamondbacks RHP Brandon Pfaadt (6-1, 3.66) vs. Dodgers RHP Yoshinobu Yamamoto (11-7, 2.76).
At Chase Field: Pfaadt continued what has been the best prolonged stretch of his career when he held the Padres to just one unearned run over 6⅔ innings. … In seven starts since rejoining the rotation in late June, he has logged a 1.55 ERA in 40⅔ innings. … Pfaadt’s four-seam fastball has been getting solid results this season, holding opposing hitters to a .231 average and .321 slugging. … Yamamoto and Pfaadt matched up on July 11 at Dodger Stadium. Pfaadt got the win, giving up two runs in 5⅓ innings, and Yamamoto allowed six runs in six innings, taking the loss. … Yamamoto bounced back from that start by logging a 2.35 ERA over his past three outings, including throwing a complete game against the Yankees and going eight innings against the Red Sox in his most recent appearance. … Yamamoto still owns a 2.92 ERA against the Diamondbacks in eight career starts.
