For years, Philadelphia Eagles fans have known exactly what DeVonta Smith brings to the table. He’s one of the cleanest route-runners in football, a receiver with some of the most dependable hands in the league. He's a player who routinely makes difficult catches look far easier than they should. He has never been the loudest personality in the room, nor has he seemed overly concerned with demanding attention.

That may be part of why he remains one of the NFL’s more underappreciated stars. What may be changing, however, is how Smith views his place in Philadelphia’s offensive hierarchy. NFL insider James Palmer recently appeared on Up & Adamsand offered a fascinating look into Smith’s offseason mindset.

DeVonta Smith's transition to the true WR1 role seems to be going according to plan

If Palmer's reporting is accurate, this hasn't been the kind of offseason where Smith simply maintained his routine and prepared for business as usual. Instead, it sounds like he approached the spring with a clear mission in mind: becoming Philadelphia's unquestioned top receiver.

“What I have been told this offseason is he has been a man possessed about ‘I am going to step into this number one role... Calling former receivers, asking them about different things this offseason.”

That's the type of quote Eagles fans should latch onto, not because Smith lacked confidence before, but because it speaks to intentional growth. Plenty of talented players talk about embracing bigger roles when opportunities present themselves. Fewer actively seek out wisdom, study others who have lived that reality, and approach their preparation with this level of focus.

Smith stated during his celebrity softball game that he looks forward to mentoring Makai Lemon. This, along with reports that he was focused on 'doing his job' amid A.J. Brown trade discussions, suggests Smith doesn't view this as an inherited opportunity.

No, this recent update suggests that he appears to view the WR1 role as something to be earned. Palmer added another fascinating wrinkle when discussing a conversation he had with Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni. According to Palmer, Sirianni believes the Eagles have only scratched the surface with Smith and that Philadelphia’s new offense could unlock dimensions of his game that haven’t yet been fully explored.

That should be a compelling thought for any Eagles fan considering what Smith has already accomplished. This is, after all, a player who has already posted three 1,000-yard seasons. Last year marked the first time since 2021 that he led the Eagles in receiving yardage, narrowly edging A.J. Brown, yet despite the production, Smith has often lived in the shadow of his more physically dominant teammate.

Brown naturally commanded headlines because of his size, personality, and game-breaking presence. Smith, meanwhile, simply kept doing what he always does: producing. The Eagles’ receiver room looks much different now. Marquise Brown brings speed. Dontayvion Wicks adds intrigue. Elijah Moore offers versatility. Rookie Makai Lemon arrives with significant hype.

Still, none of those players enter the season with Smith’s proven chemistry with Jalen Hurts or his track record of consistent excellence. That makes Palmer’s comments feel less like speculation and more like the logical next chapter.

The truth is, becoming a true WR1 is often as much about mindset as talent. Talent has never been the question with DeVonta Smith. If anything, the larger question has always been whether the offense would ever fully revolve around him. Based on Palmer’s reporting, it sounds like Smith has already decided he’s ready for that answer to be yes. If that’s true, Eagles fans may be about to witness the most complete version of DeVonta Smith’s career.
