Amid a disappointing season, the New Jersey Devils are making major changes.

The first domino was announced by the club on April 6 that Tom Fitzgerald is out as general manager. The Devils have five games remaining in a season marred by injuries and inconsistent play. The team is seven points out of a playoff spot with a 40-34-3 record.

“Tom and I had a thoughtful conversation today and agreed it was time to move in a new direction,” Devils Managing Partner David Blitzer said. “Tom changed the trajectory of our team here, including setting a franchise record for points in a season and helping make New Jersey a hockey destination. He is a well-respected leader across the Devils’ organization and NHL, and I am grateful for our friendship. I wish Tom and his family all the best."

Fitzgerald joined the organization in 2015 as the assistant general manager under Ray Shero. In 2020, he was named interim GM following the dismissal of Shero before later earning the role permanently.

The Devils made the playoffs twice in Fitzgerald's tenure, winning one series against the New York Rangers in 2023.
