The San Francisco Giants entered Friday night's series opener against the Los Angeles Angels looking to snap a five-game losing streak after an off day on Thursday. The matchup appeared to favor San Francisco, with ace Logan Webb taking the mound against Angels starter Grayson Rodriguez, who has struggled throughout the 2026 season.
The Giants snapped their losing streak in dramatic fashion, defeating the Angels 7-6 on Rafael Devers' walk-off ground-rule double in the bottom of the 10th inning. Caleb Kilian earned his third win of the season.
The Angels struck first in the opening inning on Nolan Schanuel's RBI single to take a 1-0 lead. The momentum was short-lived, however, as the Giants answered immediately in the bottom half. Devers launched a two-run homer, his 21st of the season, to put San Francisco in front 2-1.
Webb settled in after the first inning, tossing scoreless second and third innings. The Giants' offense added to the lead in the bottom of the third when Casey Schmitt crushed a three-run homer, extending the advantage to 5-1.
Although Webb worked a scoreless fourth inning, he ran into trouble in the fifth. Tyler Heineman ripped a two-run triple, and two batters later, Mike Trout added a sacrifice fly to pull the Angels within one. Los Angeles scored three runs in the inning, cutting the Giants' lead to 5-4.
For Webb, the outing continued a stretch of starts in which he has struggled to consistently keep opponents off the scoreboard. Against the Angels, it was another example of the challenges he has faced during the month of July.
Rodriguez, meanwhile, exited after four innings. While he escaped the fourth without allowing another run, his outing reflected the struggles that have defined his 2026 campaign.
He surrendered six hits, five earned runs, two walks, and three strikeouts while allowing two home runs, one each to Devers and Schmitt.
The Angels turned to Brent Suter after Rodriguez's departure, and the Giants were unable to generate much offense against the bullpen. Despite Webb's outing being far from dominant, it was a solid enough performance to leave the Giants in position to win.
Against an Angels team that has struggled this season, it wasn't his sharpest start, but he still completed six innings, allowing six hits, four earned runs, two walks, and four strikeouts. Dominic Smith followed with a clean seventh inning to preserve San Francisco's lead.
The Giants added an important insurance run in the bottom of the seventh when Daniel Susac lifted a sacrifice fly to make it 6-4. It was the only run they scored in the inning, but it provided a valuable cushion as the game remained tightly contested.
That cushion didn't last. In the top of the eighth, Vaughn Grissom belted a two-run homer off Jason Foley to even the score at 6-6. Foley finished the inning, but the home run erased San Francisco's lead and effectively reset the game heading into the late innings.
The game eventually moved into extra innings, where the Giants capitalized in the bottom of the 10th. With the bases loaded, Devers lined a ground-rule double to bring home the winning run and lift San Francisco to a 7-6 victory in the series opener.
