For the San Francisco Giants, Saturday's second game of their three-game series against the Atlanta Braves presented an opportunity to secure at least a series split.
With Logan Webb taking the mound following an impressive outing against the Miami Marlins, the Giants were hoping their ace could carry that momentum into another strong performance.
The Giants did just that, defeating the Braves 5-0 behind another dominant outing from Webb, who earned his fifth win of the season.
After managing just one run in Friday's loss, the Giants' offense responded early. In the bottom of the second inning, Rafael Devers opened the scoring with a solo home run to center field, his 13th of the season. Later in the inning, Drew Gilbert added a sacrifice fly to drive in another run, giving San Francisco a 2-0 lead.
The Giants added to their advantage in the bottom of the third as Devers struck again, this time launching a three-run home run to extend the lead to 5-0.
On the mound, Webb continued his outstanding stretch of pitching.
The right-hander tossed seven shutout innings, allowing just one hit while walking two and striking out six. He threw 92 pitches, including 60 for strikes, as he kept Atlanta's lineup under control from start to finish.
Webb has quietly put together one of his best months of the season.
Across four starts in June, he has posted a 2-1 record with a 0.87 ERA over 31 innings. Having allowed just three earned runs during the month, Webb continues to pitch at an exceptionally high level and appears to be at his best.
Following the third inning, the Giants' offense went quiet and did not score again.
However, the bullpen made sure the early lead held up. Ryan Walker delivered a scoreless eighth inning before Sam Hentges recorded the final out in the ninth to complete the shutout.
The Giants' 5-0 victory evened the series at one game apiece. San Francisco will look to secure the series win on Sunday, sending left-hander Robbie Ray (6-6, 3.70 ERA) to the mound against Braves ace Chris Sale (8-5, 2.14 ERA), who has been one of the National League's top pitchers this season.
