The Detroit Lions continue to quietly build one of the most respected coaching trees in the NFL.

According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, former New York Giants interim head coach and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka is joining Dan Campbell’s staff in Detroit in a high-ranking offensive role. While the exact title has not yet been officially announced, the move brings one of the league’s fastest-rising offensive minds into a building that already values innovation, quarterback development, and collaboration.

Kafka, just 38 years old, has been on a rapid ascent over the last decade. A former NFL quarterback, he cut his teeth in coaching with the Kansas City Chiefs, working his way from offensive quality control to quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator during the heart of Patrick Mahomes’ rise. That experience alone made him one of the hottest young offensive coaches in football.

He then joined the New York Giants in 2022, where he quickly gained national attention as offensive coordinator, helping maximize limited personnel and earning multiple head coaching interviews. By 2025, he was elevated to assistant head coach and ultimately served as the Giants’ interim head coach, further strengthening his résumé as a future franchise leader.

Now, Kafka brings that experience to Detroit, where he’ll work alongside Dan Campbell and quarterback Jared Goff, and help guide an offense that has already become one of the most explosive in the NFL. His background as a quarterback, combined with his work in Kansas City’s passing game and his leadership role in New York, makes him a natural fit in a Lions organization that places a premium on player development and schematic flexibility.

For Campbell, this is another example of surrounding himself with elite football minds — and for Kafka, it’s an opportunity to learn under one of the league’s most respected culture-builders while continuing to sharpen his credentials for another future head-coaching run.

Detroit isn’t just winning games anymore. They’re winning the coaching market, too.
