After three incredible seasons with Detroit, the Lions have rewarded Jack Campbell, who has blossomed into being one of the best linebackers in the NFL, with a four-year contract extension that will keep the former Iowa Hawkeye in the Motor City until the 2030 season.
"I signed my extension, I'm excited to be back, I'm excited to be here long-term," Campbell said in a video posted on the team's X account. "Now it's time to go win a Super Bowl."
The deal comes less than a month after the Lions declined the fifth-year option on Campbell's rookie contract due to the current cost, but it is now expected to make him one of the highest-paid off-ball linebackers in the league.
Had the Lions exercised the fifth-year option on Campbell's contract, it would have increased his 2027 base salary to nearly $22 million, put Campbell in line for a bigger payday under the league's franchise tag, and potentially cost Detroit even more on a long-term deal.
As the No. 18 overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft, Campbell has largely lived up to his billing, including leading the Lions and finishing second in the NFL in tackles with 176 last season, when he played all but eight of the team’s 1,105 defensive snaps. In 2025, he also posted career highs in sacks (five), forced fumbles (three), and fumble recoveries (two), and earned first-team All-Pro honors for the first time in his career.
While the team is also working hard at attempts to finance an extension for fellow 2023 draft picks Jahmyr Gibbs, Brian Branch, and Sam LaPorta to multi-year extensions, Campbell's new deal is hopefully just the start of a big offseason for the Lions.
