DES MOINES, Iowa — For many college football players, the goal is to keep playing after college. This season, Daviere Jones is doing just that, back in his hometown.
“I love this sport,” said Jones, a defensive back for the Iowa Barnstormers. “I’ve been playing it since I was in high school. It’s great to be reaching my dreams, and continuing to strive for more. It’s something I’ve always dreamed about, and I’m glad to be living that out right now.”
Des Moines has always been a huge part of Jones’ football career. A prep standout at Roosevelt before winning a national title at Grand View, he went off to Ferris State in Michigan, where he won another national title. Now, he’s returned home, and is continuing his football career with the Barnstormers.
After his days prepping at Roosevelt came to a close, Jones didn’t have to go far to find his college home, finding a perfect fit as a Viking.
“It was one of a kind. All my family is there, family getting to see me play college ball in my hometown was great. I love all the guys from Grand View. Made a ton of memories, met a lot of cool people, it was a great experience.”
After growing up watching the Barnstormers, Jones is now playing for them. Head coach Andre Coles described what Jones has provided for his hometown team.
“He’s provided a good energy for us in the back half of the season as a guy who’s fresh out and excited to play,” said Coles. “It’s been good to have his presence around, and anytime you can add a local kid to the mix, the guys get excited about that.”
Coles says that having local players like Jones on the team is huge, and something they’d like more of.
“Our fan base is super passionate about Des Moines, and about Iowa, so anytime we can have local talent, it rallies the fans, because they’re getting to cheer for somebody who’s homegrown, and from the area,” said Coles. “We love to have that, and we’d love to have more, actually.”
While Jones continues to adjust to the indoor game, he’s loving the opportunity to continue playing the game he loves.
“It’s different for sure,” Jones explained. “The indoor league is a little more condensed, the game is a lot faster. You have to be on point. Everyone’s great out here, everyone’s a pro. The game is fast, everyone’s great, so you have to be on point and be the best player you can be.”
“I love the game, I’ve given a lot to it, and it’s given a lot back to me,” Jones continued. “I just want to make the most of the time I can while I can.”
