Tampa Bay - The race for a playoff spot keeps getting tighter and increasingly anxious for the Red Wings.
Jake Guentzel and Gage Goncalves scored two goals each Thursday as Tampa rolled to a 4-1 victory over the Wings.
With the loss, the Wings (36-23-7, 79 points) saw their lead over Columbus - the last team out of the Eastern Conference playoff picture - to two points as the Blue Jackets (79-77) lost to Florida in a shootout, earning one point.
J.T. Compher cut the lead to 2-1 midway in the third period. Compher got his stick on Alex DeBrincat's drive that eluded goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy at 7:05, Compher's ninth goal.
Tampa goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy made 24 saves, including a sprawling save on Patrick Kane with about eight minutes left in regulation time, and the Wings pressing.
The Wings are without centers Dylan Larkin and Andrew Copp, both out with lower-body injuries. Coach Todd McLellan said after Thursday's morning skate, both Larkin and Copp will be out for two weeks before being re-evaluated.
But the Wings stayed close behind the goaltending of John Gibson (28 saves) and an admirable defensive effort. Gibson stopped on Jake Guentzel on a breakaway with six minutes left in third period, keeping the score 2-1.
Goncalves put Tampa ahead 2-0 only 1 minute 35 seconds into the third period.
Brayden Point's shot deflected off Ben Chiarot's skate and traced Goncalves' skate past Gibson, giving Tampa a two-goal lead.
Goncalves added his 10th goal later in the period, deflecting Point's shot at 6:22. Guentzel added his 29th goal with an empty net goal.
Jake Guentzel's power play goal 49 seconds into the second period gave Tampa a 1-0 lead.
Nikita Kucherov skated into the zone and slipped a pass to Guentzel, who was driving the middle. Guentzel snapped a shot past Gibson, for Guentzel's 28th goal.
