The Chicago Bears conducted their rookie minicamp last weekend, where the coaches got to observe the new rookies at work during on-field drills. For defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, he was impressed with what he saw from defensive tackle Shemar Turner, linebacker Ruben Hyppolite II and cornerback Zah Frazier.
Turner, drafted in the second round, is the perfect fit for Allen's defense given his violent, aggressive style of play. And Allen came away impressed with Turner after a weekend of practices.
"He's athletic," Allen said. "That was the first thing that we saw. You see explosion and power with this player. He's got the right temperament for what we're looking for. I think we'll have to put the saddle on him and break him a little bit … but we're excited about working with him."
While Turner's aggressive play on the field is an appealing aspect, Allen also came away impressed with Turner the person.
"I think he really loves football," Allen said. "And that's something that we look for in guys that we want to bring into the building because you have to love football to do all the things that are going to be necessary to have success in our league. He's got a good personality, and then when he's on the field, he's about business, so that's good to see."
Turner joins a defensive tackle that includes Gervon Dexter, Andrew Billings and free-agent addition Grady Jarrett, and he'll have an opportunity to contribute immediately in a rotational role while making a case for more playing time.
