Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles already has plans for second round rookie defensive tackle Shemar Turner, but in order to unleash him, they'll have to get him adjusted and adapted to the professional level.

During his initial press conference with the media at Halas Hall, Turner said he's excited by the fact that the Bears don't plan to change him or his style, but Poles believes they'll have to educate Turner, who committed seven personal fouls for the Texas A&M Aggies last season.

When discussing the selection of Turner and his style of play, Poles said that he believes every defensive player needs to have an edge to them, but putting it to correct use is how they'll get the most out of their rookie. Turner will join a defensive tackle group that includes veteran Grady Jarrett (who has an edge in his own right), Andrew Billings, and Gervon Dexter Sr. ahead of him, but there should still be opportunities for him to get on the field in his first year.

Before he can get that playing time, Poles believes they'll have to teach Turner about how to play with an educated edge and not just reckless abandonment.

"Part of it's being more disciplined and playing selfless to know when you do those things, you're hurting the entire team. We'll continue to educate him when he's in the building on that part. [But] you want that edge in your defensive linemen and your defensive players, and really all the players. And I feel like if you can pull that back a little bit, that's a lot easier than having to push guys.

"I also think that is contagious. Especially with Grady [Jarrett] and those guys, it's going to be contagious amongst the group. We're probably going to have some real tough training camp days with some fights. I think that's good, though. It just raises the level of intensity for our entire football team."

New defensive coordinator Dennis Allen will have plenty of talent to work with and mold on this Chicago Bears defense, and there are quite a few players who play with an edge. Cornerback Tyrique Stevenson at times last season let his edge get the best of him, putting him in unfavorable and unfortunate situations that hurt the team, but his talent level is still very high.

For Allen, working with players such as Stevenson and Turner, will not only take their talent to another level, but could make the Bears defense an intimidating force for their opponents next season.
