There is no question who the No. 1 and No. 2 running backs for the Houston Texans are.
Newly acquired and former Pro Bowler David Montgomery is firmly in the top spot, while Woody Marks, the Texans' top rusher last fall, will be the first call off the bench.
After that, there are plenty of questions surrounding the depth. In Houston’s first unofficial depth chart, Jawhar Jordan is listed in the No. 3 spot, followed by British Brooks, undrafted rookie Noah Whittington and fellow UDFA Joshua Pitsenberger.
With Jordan and Brooks currently out of practice due to injuries, there have been some questions about how strong Houston’s running back depth truly is.
Head coach DeMeco Ryans does not seem too concerned, pointing out Whittington and expects that he and Pitsenberger could make some good plays in Houston’s preseason games.
"Noah seems to make a play every day. He has a really good feel for pressing blocks and his vision. Just knowing when to cut, when to take the ball outside, when to make a cut back up inside. I see a guy who plays with really great vision, great feel at the running back spot. When you see guys that are lower on the depth chart in these preseason games, some of those running backs are going to shine. They're going to make some nice plays. Noah won't surprise me. Pitsenberger won't surprise me. Those guys have done it all camp. Excited to see them play."
Their first opportunity to shine will come against the Los Angeles Chargers on Thurs. Aug. 13 (7 p.m.). Los Angeles hired a new defensive coordinator in the offseason who has emphasized physicality and disruption so far in training camp.
So, this should be a good test for the Texans’ run game.
