Delta will be on the hunt for a new girls basketball head coach.
Tyronda Benning has resigned from the Eagles' girls basketball head coaching position after three seasons. Delta Athletics posted the job opening on social media on Wednesday, April 1, and Benning confirmed that she had resigned in an email to The Star Press.
"It has been a great ride and I loved my job. I resigned to do what's best for my family," Benning said in her email to The Star Press.
Delta athletic director Lynde Bratton also provided a statement on behalf of Delta Athletics.
"Sadly, Coach Benning has resigned from her position," Bratton said in an email to The Star Press. "We are incredibly grateful for the past three seasons with Coach Tyronda Benning. Her impact on our athletes and students at Delta has been truly meaningful and will be deeply missed. We know she will continue to support our athletes. We are thankful for the lasting influence she has had on our program."
A Muncie native, Benning was a standout player at Muncie Southside who went on to play college basketball at Lincoln Trail College for two years before returning to Muncie and playing at Ball State in her junior and senior seasons. She spent time serving in the Muncie Police Department before getting into coaching.
Benning took over the Eagles' program for her first high school head coaching job ahead of the 2023-24 season. She has compiled a record of 45-29 over the last three years. Under her guidance, Delta won three consecutive Delaware County Championships. In the 2024-25 season, Benning led Delta girls basketball to its first sectional championship in 32 years and its first regional championship in program history. The Eagles returned to the sectional championship this past season but fell short against Connersville.
Benning was named The Star Press Girls Basketball Coach of the Year following the 2024-25 season. This season, she was selected as one of five outstanding coaches to join the coaching staff for the Hoosier Basketball Magazine Top 60 workout.
