Indian cricket was rocked by a serious legal development involving one of its brightest young talents. On July 20, the Calcutta High Court directed police to immediately arrest Delhi Capitals and Bengal wicketkeeper Abhishek Porel in connection with an alleged rape case.
According to Live Law, the court had ordered authorities to seize the 23-year-old's electronic devices, a step taken specifically to protect the privacy and dignity of the complainant in the matter.
The case was building since June, when a complaint was first registered against the cricketer in West Bengal. Porel, who has represented Delhi Capitals since 2023, has consistently denied the allegations made against him.

What the court had ordered
The directions relate to Mogra Police Station FIR No. 346 of 2026, which Live Law reported included several non-bailable offences under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, among them rape and criminal intimidation, alongside sections of the Information Technology Act.

Porel was accused of allegedly threatening to circulate intimate photographs and videos of a medical student, who is the complainant in the case. The court petition submitted that further steps were required by the police to seize devices allegedly containing obscene photographs of the complainant.
Journalist Subhayan Chakraborty of RevSportz, who had followed the case since its inception, reported that the court specifically instructed authorities to seize the devices in order to protect the complainant's privacy and prevent the sharing of any such material.
The original complaint was lodged at Mogra Police Station in the Hooghly district by the complainant and her mother in June, weeks after the conclusion of IPL 2026. It was alleged that the two had been in a relationship for over three years.
Porel denied the allegations when they first surfaced. "I am playing well now, so things are coming up. Will talk about this when police investigate," the cricketer told the media at the time, dismissing the claims as false.

Bengal police arrest Abhishek Porel
According to multiple reports, on August 11, Bengal police arrested Porel on rape and criminal allegations from his residence.
The FIR from the complainant, according to NDTV, read: "Abishek Porel illegally confined the complainant. He denied her food and deliberately kept her isolated. As a result... the complainant became physically weak and was unable to walk properly. Despite having a flight... she was compelled to seek immediate medical attention due to the injuries sustained."
A police official later told PTI, "We have received a complaint and started an investigation."

A case with serious implications for a rising career
It must be stressed that these remain allegations, and Porel is entitled to the presumption of innocence until any court determines otherwise. A direction to arrest is a procedural step in an investigation rather than a finding of guilt.
The professional consequences, however, are already significant. Porel was retained by Delhi Capitals for four crore rupees ahead of IPL 2026 and has been a fixture in Bengal's domestic setup, and non-bailable charges of this nature inevitably raise questions about his immediate availability.
Neither Delhi Capitals nor the Cricket Association of Bengal has issued a public statement. Indian cricket has faced similar situations recently, with Royal Challengers Bengaluru's Yash Dayal missing an entire IPL season while a comparable case remained unresolved, and the response to this one will be closely watched.
