ATLANTIC CITY − Delbarton remains in a league of its own.
The state’s top-ranked wrestling team finished with the most state champions and the unofficial team title on March 14 at the 93rd NJSIAA Championships at Boardwalk Hall.
The Morristown school finished with a state-best three champions, going 3 for 7 in title bouts.
Seniors Jayden James and Carl Betz, and junior Cameron Sontz captured individual state titles as the Green Wave dominated the annual three-day event.
For Sontz (120), it was his third state title, while James (165) secured. Betz (190), a senior, nailed down his first.
Juniors Gabe Logan (175) and Ryan DeGeorge (144), and sophomores Tommy Marchetti (126) and Nick Schwartz (150) took second in their weight classes.
James (36-0), a four-time medalist and three-time finalist, was the first of the three to celebrate a title. The top seed pinned Ryan Gavrish of St. John Vianney in 1:23 in the championship bout.
“I bleed green until the day I die,” James said. “It’s crazy that it’s over, but it’s a special time.”
The Penn State commit dominated the tournament, registering three technical falls and two falls in his five bouts.
“I’m grateful for all the people who got me down here. I just wanted to have fun with all my teammates and friends in my final tournament,” said James, who finishes with a 145-4-career record. “I’ve been able to grow and mature since my freshman year. It’s a long journey and I still have a long way to go. I’m super excited.”
Sontz (42-3), the top seed at 120 pounds, needed overtime to defeat returning state champion JoJo Burke of St Joseph (Montvale) in the title bout.
Tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, Sontz scored a takedown with 18 seconds left in the extra session, followed by four back points to secure the win.
“I didn’t expect the match to be as close as it was. I felt pretty confident going in,” Sontz said. “My goal since I was a kid is to win four state titles. It’s pretty cool knowing I have a shot to get it done next year.”
Betz (38-3), the top seed at 190 pounds, put the icing on the cake as the senior closed out the afternoon for the Green Wave. The Penn commit secured a 6-2 decision over Don Bosco’s Nevin Mattessich in the final.
“It’s been a lifelong goal. It’s every kid’s dream to win a state title. I went out there and did it and it feels great,” Betz said. “I didn’t even start my freshman year. As a sophomore, I didn’t have the focus I wanted. Junior year it started to build. Now I’m at the top of the podium. It feels awesome.”
