(WFRV) – After a red-hot finish to last season, the De Pere Redbirds are hoping that momentum carries into the fall as they look to get off to a fast start.
De Pere found itself sitting at 3-4 through its first seven games a season ago. The Redbirds could have folded, but instead rattled off four straight wins, including victories over FVA powerhouse Neenah and a tough Hudson squad, to advance to the sectional final.
“It’s about continuing to build off that belief. It’s not just that we can play with anyone, but that we can beat anyone if we have the right mindset and approach,” head coach Ben Strickland expressed. “A big message to our kids, and why we’ve accelerated what we’ve been doing in the offseason, is because over the last four years we haven’t started very fast. We need to start the season fast and build off that momentum, rather than trying to ease our way through the season and figure it out as we go. We have to go out there and attack it.”
With a talented group of underclassmen returning, players told Local 5 that the lessons learned during last year’s playoff run will help carry over into the new season.
“We learned that, no matter what, it’s not about the size of the dog—it’s about the fight in the dog. We keep competing, we keep getting better while learning from those mistakes, and hopefully it shows up on Friday nights,” De Pere senior Cayden Cavanaugh said.
De Pere opens the 2026 season on the road against Manitowoc Lincoln on Thursday, Aug. 20, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
