Thank all of you who have been providing quality posts today, especially you Krang...your posting of articles and analyses has helped to put this draft into better perspective. I love this board. (Thanks again, Skkorp) As a Cardinal fan, this board is by far the best resource I have...thanks to all of you. We ARE the most loyal and resilient fans in the NFL.

The draft is always a disappointment of sorts for me. It never goes the way I hope for the Cardinals. As all of you know, I was sky high on Byron Leftwich...and would have been delirious if the Cardinals had selected him. And even though I had some nagging questions about Terrell Suggs, the way ESPN was promoting his selection...I just knew the Cardinals were going to once again face the relentless scrutiny of the NFL pundits...and the fans. It seemed clear all along that Suggs was not the Cardinals' pick. Regardless of Suggs' recent legal snags and sub-par workouts, I think Bidwill and company became very leery of tabbing another Sun Devil savior.

As I have calmed down...I have realized that all four first day players have significant talent and it will be up to the Cardinal coaches to bring out the best of that talent. We can't expect too much of these rookies immediately...which is hard to do when the needs of the team are so glaring. This is why it is imperative for Rod Graves to add at least one veteran WR and one veteran DE between the draft and training camp.

Quick Takes on the Draftees:

1A: Bryant Johnson. Big and physical possession type who has serious leaping ability...which should come in handy especially in the red zone. Check out the picture of him leaping for a catch against Iowa in the Sporting News Draft publication. Incredible! Solid pick who will have to prove he was not a reach at #17. Punt returning ability is an added and welcomed asset.

1B: Calvin Pace. Honestly I haven't seen many Wake Forest games and neither have most of you. However, for him to stand out as the ACC Defensive Player of the Year...and a First Team All-American (College Football Writers) as a Demon Deacon, no less...is certainly a testament to his ability. His highlight tapes show he has a nice combination of strength and quickess...closes quickly on the ball...and uses his hands well to gain leverage and separation. Seems to have exemplary character.

2: Anquan Boldin. I did see quite a bit of Boldin and I had him going to the Jets at #22 in my mock earlier in the week. IMO, this guy has first round intangibles, by virtue of his size, quickness and strength and the fact that he's a tenacious, relentless competitor. To get him at #54 softens the blow of losing the #37 because Boldin could easily have been one of the first 35 selections.

3: Gerald Hayes. I have seen Hayes play several times and I must say he really made me sit up and take notice. He's a muscular and extremely agile defender who makes plays all over the field. Has the size to play strong side LB or MLB. Is an under-rated blitzer. Can really get after the QB. Quite frankly I was amazed he was still on the board at #70. He'll need an adjustment period, as all rookies do, but his versatility should give Coach Marmie some attractive options.

Walt you see it exactly as I do.

Graves didn't bring us a bunch of flashy "name" players, he brought us 4 solid, good players. Each one of them has upside and can contribute some way immediately.

I like Pace, and I really don't care that much that we "reached" on him. It really is subjective and Pace very well could be a very good player. He has size, strength, speed, production and went to a very demanding academic school (from the state of North
Carolina that has quite a list of good schools).

I liked Boldin, and I agree he very well could be our biggest pick of this draft. The past few weeks I was trying to convince people to ignore Suggs' workouts......you have to do the same with Boldin. He is a heck of a football player and a steal at 54.

Johnson is a guy that could be a starting wideout for us for years to come. He is a Frank Sanders clone with more speed....what's not to like about that?

Gerald Hayes is a playmaker, and was one of the best defensive players in the country this year. At the Insight.com Bowl he was the best player on the field. We could be looking at a future starting linebacker.

thank you for this level headed post... I cant believe how stupid some of these guys are getting...

I liked all the picks, I would of liked a DT somewhere, but i am sure Mac knows what quality of players he is getting... And I am sure there will be a DT on sunday...

Both WR's impressed me... they look very explosive and sure handed!

The DE seems to be both a passrusher and a run stopper, I like that. He has a nice combo od speed and power. They say he playes BIGGER than he is, which is allways a pluss...

And the MLB sounds like a very good pick also. Mckinnion is a solid guy, but we could use a better athlete in the near future at that spot...

Thx for the great post

I feel much better about the draft.

The only bad part was losing the 4th round pick

Gerald Hayes was a steal

I have contacts who personally know members of the Notre Dame football coaching staff and to a man they felt that Hayes was the best and toughest defensive player they faced all this year. They classed him as a major play disrupter and playmaker.

I think he is a definite steal for us.

I mentioned a few weeks ago when resigned both davis and tanner that I felt we would not go dt in round one...this was when robertson or kennedy looked like possible choices. In addition, we spent a #1 on a dtackle last season and I felt we would not do it again this season. Bryant is going to be the clear starter at one tackle. That leaves the other tackle spot - and I think the cardinals are a little more sold on the rotation of tanner, davis and bell than we are...Also - we only brought in one tackle in free agency - thorton - who is a smallish tackle...which surprised me - I thought we would be going after a 325 + lb guy this offseason - but so far that is not the case.

I'll have to trust Walter and Krang on their assessment of these players. They have watched waaaayyy more college football than I have.

If they are right then this may have been a good way for the Cards to go. This team had too many holes going into the draft to have one player really be a difference maker. So trading down makes sense.

Not sure I understand why they were drafting for depth at MLB though. Their were still DTs on the board and they have no 4th round pick. They apparently got a faster MLB, maybe they plan on more blitzing to generate a pass rush?

I just can't quite figure this draft out. Were they drafting need picks or best available player/athlete?

Sounds like the Cardnials got some solid players.

Drafts cannot be really evaluated for a couple years anyway. You have to have it, but so much more than talent goes into making it in the NFL.

I am starting to feel like this team is getting Coach Mac's stamp on it more and more. When he came in he said "it is broke and we are gonna fix it". Changing attitude is very difficult and it takes time to change enough players where the old problems are gone.

I would rather have the 17th and 18th pick in camp than a #6 holdout!
