Barstool Sports owner Dave Portnoy is a fan of Opening Day, but especially in the Queen City.
The social media personality voiced his opinion in a video he posted to his Facebook on Wednesday, March 25.
In the video, Portnoy slammed the MLB's decision to start the 2026 season with Opening Night. The game, which occurred between the New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants, took place in San Francisco on Wednesday night and was broadcast nationally on Netflix.
"MLB will screw up a ham sandwich. There should not be nighttime Opening Day baseball. It's stupid," he said. "Baseball should start one o'clock, two o'clock, in the afternoon. Maybe at Cincinnati, maybe at Baltimore," he said.
"We're at Cincinnati, which is cool," he said as an aside. Portnoy, who is a well-known Boston Red Sox fan, is referring to the Red Sox taking on the Cincinnati Reds for the Reds' home opener Thursday, March 26.
"Opening Day shouldn't be in Japan. Opening Day shouldn't be at night. Opening Day shouldn't be anywhere but an American League ballpark, National League ballpark at one o'clock in the afternoon, two o'clock in the afternoon. That's Opening Day," Portnoy said.
For many years, the Reds had the first game scheduled each season, before anyone else played, but that tradition has fallen by the wayside in recent years as international openers are often played several days before the rest of the season starts.
Enquirer reporter Jeff Suess contributed to this report.
