The Carolina Panthers defense is little and brittle in the middle. But they'll have to figure out how to get big and healthy for their huge regular-season finale on Saturday.
Thursday's injury report ruled inside linebacker Claudin Cherelus out of this weekend's matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers due to ankle and calf injuries. Cherelus had already been filling in for usual starter Trevin Wallace, who underwent season-ending shoulder surgery a little over a week ago.
As a result, the Panthers will have to dig even deeper at a position that's been a weakness for the past few years. Head coach Dave Canales, following this afternoon's practice, explained how they'll address the situation going into what could be a winner-take-all showdown for the NFC South title:
Barnes has made two starts for Carolina, in Week 12 and 13. The sixth-year veteran totaled 14 tackles in those outings.
Along with Barnes, the Panthers' depth chart at the inside linebacker spot includes starter Christian Rozeboom, undrafted rookie Bam Martin-Scott and third-stringer Maema Njongmeta.
