When Davante Adams was traded to the New York Jets in 2024, the No. 17 was already occupied by one of his new teammates. Rookie Malachi Corley picked that number after he was drafted in the third round, but considering Adams wore it his entire career up to that point, it’s no surprise he wanted to buy it off the young receiver.
On the “Bussin’ With The Boys” podcast, Adams revealed he brought a backpack filled with $17,000 in cash to the facility, which he was going to give to Corley for No. 17.
“I’m thinking, like, this ain’t nothing crazy,” Adams said. “But certainly, to give up your number as a rookie, like, you ain’t did s--- yet. It was like Week 6 and I think he played four plays at that point. Like, you have no attachment to this right now. I’ll pay for your whole family to get new jerseys, because they go out and spend money on it. ‘However many jerseys you need me to buy, I’ll do that. And how about $17,000 for the number 17?”
That’s when Corley countered with an insane request. He wanted $1 million for the number.
“He said, ‘It’s great to have you big brow. I can't wait to learn from you, but I'm going to need a million,’” Adams recalled.
Adams’ response was perfect. Instead of negotiating with Corley, he went to Jets owner Woody Johnson and asked for the jersey number directly.
“I went straight to Woody and said, ‘Give me 17, bro.’ And he just took it off of him,” Adams said.
So instead of getting $17,000 from Adams, it seems Corley got nothing.
It was reported last summer that Corley asked Adams for $120,000, but that number was way off. Adams says he wanted a million.
Corley wound up switching to No. 14 for the rest of the season before being cut by the Jets and landing with the Browns, where he now wears No. 83.
