When the Washington Commanders approach free agency, everyone has input. General manager Adam Peters solicits the opinions of not only his head coach and coordinators but also the position coaches.

This year, the Commanders hired two new coordinators under head coach Dan Quinn. They're both a first-time coordinator in the NFL. Daronte Jones comes to the Commanders to run the defense. It's an opportunity he's been waiting for a while.

Jones has spent the past four seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, where he ran the secondary for defensive coordinator Brian Flores. It was during those NFC North battles against the Detroit Lions that he noticed cornerback Amik Robertson.

The 5-foot-8, 187-pound Robertson signed a two-year deal with Washington in March. Despite his size, Robertson can play inside or outside. The Commanders plan to use Robertson in the slot.

From hearing Jones talk about Robertson this week, it sure sounds like he had a big voice in bringing him to Washington. One matchup really made Jones take notice.

"I've seen him twice a year the last couple of years at Detroit," Robertson said. "And so, just his grit. You know, I watched him last year, maybe the year before, I think it was, I mean, he was solo against [Minnesota Vikings WR] Justin Jefferson. You know, anybody who has the confidence to do that and not blink is my type of guy. And that's the type of guy for the Washington Commanders. And so just that confidence level that he exudes, the temperament that he plays with, that's everything that we're looking in looking for in terms of a Commander."

Jones wasn't done praising Robertson. "Amik is a pit bull out there, as we know, he plays with a certain level of intensity."

Robertson plays with confidence and a short memory, important traits for a cornerback. His success against Jefferson isn't a one-off either. The two have been battling since their high school days through college and into the NFL.

When Quinn talks about traits that make up a Commander, Robertson fits the bill. Washington's cornerback group was a disaster in 2025. The Commanders believe an improved pass rush, a new defensive scheme and the addition of Robertson help turn the unit around in 2026.
