Georgia newcomer Dante Dowdell was expected to receive serious touches after transferring from Kentucky ahead of the 2026 season.

Now, however, it's unclear when Dowdell will take to the field in Bulldogs colors. The Mississippi native is undergoing treatment for "serious" injuries he suffered after being involved in an ATV accident near his home.

Tuesday, July 21​

1:30 p.m.: Head coach Kirby Smart confirmed to ESPN that Dowdell suffered "serious" injuries after being involved in an ATV accident. He is currently being treated at Shepherd Center in Atlanta, a medical facility that specializes in treatment and rehabilitation, according to ESPN.

"He's injured," Smart said during SEC Media Day. "We don't know when his return will be. I don't know the specifics of it, to be honest with you. It was a recreational vehicle, and he had some serious injuries."

What happened to Dante Dowdell?​

Details regarding Dowdell's injury are scarce at the moment. What is known is that he suffered injuries after being involved in an ATV accident near his home in Picayune, Miss.

Smart explained that Dowdell's status for the upcoming season is unknown. The senior tailback spent the 2025 season with Kentucky, recording 560 yards and three touchdowns with the Wildcats. A former four-star recruit, Dowdell was expected to serve as Georgia's top understudy behind returning starter Nate Frazier. He also played for Oregon and Nebraska in his collegiate career, tallying 614 yards and 12 scores in his lone year with the Cornhuskers.
