A long time ago, the conversations surrounding Jalen Hurts started to feel all too familiar and much too often. Every offseason seems to produce a new debate about the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback. One year, everyone is wrapped up in discussions about whether he can throw the deep ball. The next conversation shifts to whether he can process defenses quickly. More recently, debate centers on his ability to adapt to new offensive systems and operate under center more frequently.
Through it all, Hurts has continued stacking wins. That's one reason ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky has always defended him. As he says, the facts and opinions never matched, so while speaking with 94 WIP-FM's Hugh Douglas, he saw no reason to change his tone. Once again, Orlovsky named Hurts among the top third of gunslingers in the game.
Orlovsky once played the game. While others focus on perceived limitations, Orlovsky often points to the results. It's difficult to argue with those. Hurts has led Philadelphia to two Super Bowls and won one. He has, without question, established himself as one of the NFL's premier leaders.
Perhaps, more interesting than Orlovsky's defense is the fact that defense remains necessary. Few quarterbacks have accomplished more over the past several seasons, yet Hurts continues to receive scrutiny that many similarly accomplished players avoid.
Perhaps some of that stems from the strength of Philadelphia's roster. Critics often point to the Eagles' offensive line, running game, and supporting cast. Others focus on statistics and compare Hurts to quarterbacks who throw for more yards. The problem with that argument is simple. Winning matters, and few quarterbacks have done more winning than Hurts.
Reasonable people can disagree about exactly where Hurts belongs in the rankings. Some will place him fifth. Others may slot him eighth or ninth. Quarterback rankings will always generate debate. The larger point remains difficult to dispute. Jalen Hurts belongs in the top-10 conversation. At this stage, the résumé speaks for itself.
