The Oregon Ducks football team under Dan Lanning has never shied away from adding talent via the transfer portal. In fact, the Ducks have been more successful at it than most teams in the country.
Lanning won't go to the portal just for the sake of adding talent if he doesn't need to, though.
Oregon could easily go in the portal now and find a linebacker or two, but Lanning says he's perfectly happy with the guys that he has at that spot right now. There's no need to add to that position.
“We won’t pursue anybody in the portal for a linebacker. I feel really good about our linebacker group, I like the guys we have," Lanning said. "Jerry (Mixon) is a guy who has worked extremely hard, done an unbelievable job, and continues to improve. When he keeps that his focus, he’s really going to be a guy that can help us. There are a lot of guys in that room that can play winning football, it just comes with experience.”
Oregon has lost linebackers such as Jeffrey Bassa and Jestin Jacobs to the NFL this year, but they have a group of young linebackers that have great talent. They just need some experience and by the sounds of it, they'll get plenty of experience in 2025.
Guys such as Blake Purchase, who had a scoop-and-score in the spring game, are going to see significant time on the field this coming season at outside linebacker. Meanwhile, the Ducks have a whole host of young former blue-chip players at ILB, including Jerry Mixon, Brayden Platt, Dylan Williams, and Kamar Mothudi, all of whom looked great on Saturday.
While experience might be a question, Lanning doesn't seem to be concerned. Thankfully for the Ducks, they have a linebacker like Bryce Boettcher, who is one of the best around to look to for leadership on and off the field.
