The Oregon Ducks aren't expected to be major players in the transfer portal this spring, as they did much of their damage in the winter window by adding some of the top-ranked players in the nation, including OT Isaiah World, S Dillon Thieneman, and RB Makhi Hughes.
However, Dan Lanning has always maintained that if there is an opportunity to improve the roster, he is never going to be one to turn it down. That means constantly looking at who is available, and considering whether or not they would be a fit in Eugene.
With the spring transfer portal window opening on Wednesday, a long list of players became available for Oregon to parse through. In the end, they may take nobody and go into the 2025 season with the roster as is. Or, they could add a player or two at a few positions of need.
Before we go through a list of potential targets for the Ducks, let's go over the areas of potential need for the Ducks:
Kenyon Sadiq and Jamari Johnson should be great this year, but beyond those two, there isn't much depth in the room, considering that Roger Saleapaga may not be ready to play until midway through the season.
You've got Bryce Boettcher and Devon Jackson as the only two with legitimate reps. After that, you're relying on young players like Brayden Platt, Jerry Mixon, Kamar Mothudi, Dylan Williams, and Gavin Nix to step up.
Only Jahlil Florence has experience starting with the Ducks, and while guys like Theran Johnson and Jadon Canady have reps at a Power 4 level, you may need more experience than a talented group that contains Ify Obidegwu, Sione Laulea, Dakoda Fields, Na'eem Offord, and Dorain Brew.
Oregon's WR room is stacked with talent, but not a ton of experience. Evan Stewart has shown a high upside, and there are expectations for Dakorien Moore to break out and be a star. But who of Kyler Kasper, Justius Lowe, Jeremiah McLellan, Jurrion Dickey, Malik Benson, or Gary Bryant Jr. will step up? If a star becomes available, maybe you take him.
With that being said, here's a look at some potential names that Oregon looks at in the portal this spring:
Career Stats: 40 games, 109 catches, 1,212 yards, 10 TDs
Oregon's new WR coach Ross Douglas coached Pena for a season at Syracuse in 2024, and helped him reach career numbers, putting up 84 catches for 941 yards and 9 TDs. If the Ducks are looking for a veteran WR who has proven production and is familiar with the coaching staff, look no further.
Career Stats: 36 games, 163 catches, 1,507 yards, 18 TDs
The former Ball State TE transferred to Wisconsin earlier this year, but entered the portal once again this week. He has a ton of production in his career and could be a perfect addition to Oregon's TE room that is badly in need of some depth.
Career Stats: None
Mitchell didn't play in his freshman season with the Sooners, but he is a former highly-rated recruit who went to Oklahoma as the No. 154 player in the 2024 class. Dan Lanning offered Mitchell out of high school, so there is previous interest there.
Career Stats: 21 games, 63 tackles, 4 sacks
After switching from safety to linebacker going into the 2024 season, Thomas saw his production increase and he put together a solid season for the Hilltoppers. He wouldn't be a starter at Oregon, but could add to the depth of the room.
Career Stats: 8 games, 8 catches, 123 yards
A former 5-star recruit and the No. 5 WR in the 2024 recruiting class, Oregon was after Hudson out of high school. He hasn't lived up to his hype so far, but there is a high ceiling there if you're willing to take the risk.
Career Stats: 30 games, 44 tackles, 7 TFLs, 2 INTs, 8 PBUs
The former Fresno State cornerback transferred to Stanford earlier this offseason, but re-entered the portal following the spring season. He is a veteran player with solid experience and could be added as a nice depth piece.
