Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning has long been considered one of the best college football coaches in the nation, and that was borne out on Thursday. The Dodd Trophy released its preseason watch list for the 2026 season, and Lanning was listed as a coach to keep an eye on.
20 coaches in total were named to the list, including some heavy hitters like Georgia's Kirby Smart, Texas' Steve Sarkisian, Ohio State's Ryan Day, Notre Dame's Marcus Freeman, and Texas A&M's Mike Elko.
"The Dodd Trophy, college football’s most coveted national coaching award, celebrates the head coach of a team who enjoys success on the gridiron, while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership and integrity– the three pillars of legendary coach Bobby Dodd’s coaching philosophy," The Dodd Trophy wrote in a release. "The award was established to honor the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division 1A) head football coach whose program represents the highest ideals on and off the field."
In his four seasons at Oregon, Lanning is 48-8 at Oregon, with two trips to the College Football Playoff and a Big Ten Championship victory in 2024. Going into the new season, Oregon is expected to have one of the most talented rosters in the nation, and the best of the Lanning era.
While the Ducks have been a great regular-season team over the past few years, they've at times struggled in the postseason, so that will be the biggest test for Lanning to overcome this upcoming season.
