In the midst of one of the most stunning finishes in March Madness history, UConn coach Dan Hurley went head-to-head with referee Roger Ayers following Braylon Mullins' game-winning 3 over Duke.
The interaction drew outrage online and had fans questioning whether Hurley should've received a technical foul or some other form of punishment. Now, ESPN college basketball analyst Seth Greenberg is coming to Hurley's defense.
“That situation right there, that is absolutely nothing,” Greenberg said. “I talked to Roger today. He said, ‘What are you talking about?’ He literally didn’t know what I was talking about. He said, ‘Nothing happened. The ball went in. I was running back. They were celebrating. Danny leaned in, said something to me. I said something to him. It was absolutely nothing.'”
Greenberg also spoke to Hurley, who's apparently equally unaware of the controversy.
“I spoke to Dan as well,” Greenberg said. “And Dan said he didn’t understand what was going on. He has so much respect with Roger. He’s never had a problem with him. That was social media trying to create something out of nothing because of Dan Hurley’s ‘allegedly’ reputation.”
Here's a look at the interaction so you can make your own judgement:
Hurley is one of the most animated coaches in the sport, so it's unsurprising to see him get fired up after one of the biggest moments of his career. So if Ayers is indeed fine with the interaction, those who claim to be concerned with him or his safety should follow suit.
