Allen Park — Jahmyr Gibbs is on the clock.
Following a massive market-setting extension for Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson, all eyes are on the Detroit Lions as they try to get their own superstar rusher under contract to end an apparent contract hold-in.
Gibbs has not practiced through the first five days of training camp, although he watched from the sidelines on Sunday and Monday.
Lions coach Dan Campbell said the Robinson deal is "certainly not gonna hurt" expedite the process for Gibbs.
"We'll see. Look, I'm anxious to get Gibbs back out there," Campbell said. "Every day that goes by, that's another day that you feel like you missed with him, and getting him out there with the guys, and him ... doing his part. So, but there again, man, it'll get done when it gets done."
Gibbs broke his silence on the hold-in on his way off the field on Monday, saying, "Only time will tell," when asked whether he'll be back on the field for practice.
Asked a follow-up about whether he needs a new deal before returning, Gibbs said, "Nah, it's not about that."
Asked another follow-up about what the absence is about, Gibbs said, "I don't know."
The Lions are counting on Gibbs as their most important offensive skill player this upcoming season. His role is expected to increase even further following the Lions' trade of David Montgomery this past offseason, as Campbell said he wants Gibbs to be the team's "bellcow" in 2026.
"He really became more of that last year," Campbell said. "But we're going to hang our hat on him quite a bit."
