Ahead of the Detroit's first padded training camp practice, Lions head coach Dan Campbell was asked about the right tackle competition and if free agent signing Larry Borom has a shot to win that job over first-round 2026 NFL Draft pick Blake Miller.
"Well, there again, this is the first day of pads, so we like where Blake (is at). We feel like he's gotten a little bit better every day and that's a good thing. Larry's played in this league. But now here we go, now it's real, right. So, we can talk about how good somebody looks, how much better they get without pads on. Well, now the pads are on. So, yeah, anybody's got a shot. So, we'll see what it looks like.
"My gut tells me that Blake's going to continue to grow, but we'll see. It goes back to what I said. I mean, we're about to find out a lot now, so that's good news," Campbell said.
As the pads start popping, from the sounds of that, it feels like Campbell and Detroit expect Miller to win the right tackle job. Of course, there's a long ways to go in camp and Miller will have to earn that opportunity over Borom, who arrives in the Motor City with 38 career starts across five NFL seasons with the Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins.
While Miller and Borom are the two primary contenders, one of the standouts on Sunday was second-year pro Miles Frazier. Frazier was spotted working at left tackle, left guard, right guard and right tackle.
Coach Campbell said don't count Frazier out as a possibility at right tackle.
"Now, we've been, Hank's been throwing Miles out a little bit. Frazier, some of this tackle work. It's early, but there's some good reps. There's some good reps. Look, he's played all the positions already in four days and some in spring. Both guards, both tackles. Which is another reason why we liked him, why we drafted him, because that's what he did at LSU. He's left tackle, he's left guard, he's right guard, he's right tackle. He's back to left guard.
"So, our eyes are open for him, too. Don't sleep on him," Campbell said.
