Mar. 16—LANGSTON, Okla. — A rough second half spelled the end of the Dakota Wesleyan University women's basketball season on Sunday afternoon at the hands of fourth-seeded Langston University in a 79-68 decision in an NAIA tournament second-round game at C.F. Gayles Field House.
The season ends at 25-7 for the fifth-seeded Tigers. Langston (31-2) will advance to play another Great Plains Athletic Conference foe and quadrant No. 1 seed Dordt University in the national round of 16 on Thursday in Sioux City, Iowa.
DWU led 39-36 at halftime and by as many as eight points early in the third period but ran into offensive troubles as the half wore on, shooting 34.6% from the field in the second 20 minutes. Langston was able to put together a 14-1 run across the middle section of the third quarter and the Tigers committed four turnovers in a four-minute span that allowed Langston to lead 55-48 and eventually take a five-point edge into the final quarter.
The Tigers never could pass Langston for the lead again, despite getting within two points with four minutes left. Langston's Koreea Kirksey hit a big 3-pointer with 3:40 left to put the Lions up five points, and the lead stayed at two possessions or more for the rest of the game. The Lions were also a perfect 10-for-10 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter, and DWU converted only one of its final seven shots.
DWU finished 20-for-30 on free throws in the game, including 10-for-16 in the second half. The fourth quarter included a Langston technical foul with 7:44 remaining and DWU trailing by three points, but the Tigers missed both ensuing free throws, unable to take advantage.
For the second straight day, DWU was led by Emma Yost's 23 points, while Rylee Rosenquist had 21 points and seven rebounds. Avery Broughton had 10 points and seven rebounds and Taliyah Hayes had nine points for the Tigers, who finished shooting 44.% from the field after shooting 56.5% from the field in the first half. DWU had 15 turnovers, which Langston converted directly into 18 points. The Lions also outscored DWU 24-10 in bench points and 38-30 in the paint.
Mikayla Woods had 20 points for the Lions, with 18 points from Jordynn Conner, 15 points from Jordan Brown and 11 points from Kirksey. The second-round game was played Sunday after the entire site's first-round games scheduled for Friday were moved to Saturday due to wildfires in central Oklahoma, making it unsafe to play as originally scheduled.
