Feb. 27—WILKES-BARRE TWP. — Wyoming Seminary had a 10-point lead entering the fourth quarter Friday afternoon.
Two things standing between the Blue Knights from making school history were eight minutes ... and Mountain View 2,000-point scorer Addison Kilmer. They couldn't conquer either.
Kilmer dominated the fourth quarter, scoring 16 of her game-high 31 points as Mountain View handed Seminary a heartbreaking 47-43 loss in the District 2 Class 2A girls basketball championship game at Mohegan Arena.
"She's had a great career. There's a reason she is a 2,000-point scorer," Seminary coach CJ Kersey said. "There is a reason she's heading off to East Stroudsburg. I thought the first three quarters we did a pretty good job against her, but it's tough to keep a player like that down for four quarters."
Kilmer, a 6-foot-2 senior, went on a 7-0 tear that flipped a 43-39 Seminary lead with 2:48 to play into a 46-43 Mountain View advantage with 16.5 seconds remaining. She added a blocked shot with four seconds left as Mountain View (19-6) won its fourth consecutive District 2 championship and second at the Class 2A level. The Eagles won the Class A titles in 2023 and 2024.
"My teammates, they can get me the ball when I ask for it," Kilmer said. "That was a big thing for us, breaking the press. That was so hard for us. Once we did, they knew to get me the ball."
Mountain View will play District 4 third seed Northwest (19-6) on Friday, March 6, in the first round of the PIAA state playoffs. Seminary (17-7) will also play in states on the same day against District 4 champion Muncy (22-2).
Seminary will be making its first state appearance since 1999. The Blue Knights remain without a District 2 championship, but it appeared that was going to change Friday.
Ellie Kersey hit a 3-pointer with four seconds left in the third quarter and along with a pair of treys from Stella Ruiz enabled Seminary to enter the fourth quarter with a 37-27 lead. The Blue Knights scored just six more points.
Aubrey Sanders, who had 14 points, ignited the Mountain View comeback with a 3-pointer to start the fourth. Seminary's Ella Stambaugh made a three-point play at 6:40 and Seminary's only other field goal came from her nearly four minutes later.
Obscured from Kilmer's offensive outburst in the fourth quarter was a significant drop in turnovers by Mountain View. The Eagles had 25 through the first three quarters as Seminary's press harassed the ballhandlers. They had two in the fourth quarter.
"We just said going into the fourth quarter it's a five-possession game," Mountain View coach Corey Gesford said. "We just wanted to cut it in half at the four-minute mark and we'll go from there. That's what we did. We chipped away at it and relied on our signature defense."
