Pitching leads CVCA, Hoban to OHSAA regional semifinal baseball wins

CVCA senior Kyle Shaw pitched 6⅔ shutout innings and junior Alex Mammone recorded the final out in a 2-0 win over Chardon in Wednesday’s opener.

“They are fantastic,” Hoban coach Derek Carmichael said of CVCA. “I scouted them earlier this year. I came to the game earlier today. That’s a really good team, and they have got a really good arm throwing tomorrow. Northeast Ohio has really good baseball. It feels like every day is a rivalry game when we get to play one of these top dogs.”

Hoban sophomore Matthew Ramsey pitched a five-inning shutout in a 10-0 win over St. Vincent-St. Mary in Wednesday’s nightcap.

CVCA coach Jason Herblet spoke with the Akron Beacon Journal before Hoban’s win over STVM, and lauded both teams for having “solid pitching and solid [batting] lineups.”

Shaw limited Chardon (18-13) to one hit and four walks. He struck out five.

“Today was the best day for my off speed I've had in a while,” Shaw said. “I was able to just trust myself. I trust my teammates behind me. I've been here before. I know I can do it. Everything worked out and clicked today.”

Herblet said he appreciated how Shaw “battled” on the mound.

“He's kind of been our go-to-guy all year,” Herblet said. “A senior. A guy that we respect a ton. A guy that we know is going to go out and get it done for us. Today was one of his best outings he has had all year. It was fun to watch him deal.”

Herblet prasied Mammone as “a reliable reliever for us all year.”

Ramsey limited STVM (19-10) to two hits and one walk. He struck out six.

“Fastball and slider felt good,” Ramsey said. “We just knew we had to come in this game and attack, and my defense made plays behind me.”

Hoban scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning to help Ramsey settle in.

“That is the best feeling in the world,” Ramsey said of the early run support. “You know you can go out there and you don’t have to be too perfect and just attack. My offense helped me so much today.”

When asked what was working well for Ramsey, Carmichael said “everything.”

“He established strike one early [in counts], which opens up his whole arsenal of pitches,” Carmichael continued. “His big misses, he reduced. His last outing, he had a lot of big misses. He reduced that today and just attacked hitters the whole time, let the defense play, which keeps them engaged. Just a fantastic outing. Everything we expect from him.”

CVCA advances to OHSAA baseball regional final with two runs

CVCA scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning against Chardon when Jonah Gaudio, Peyton Drabick, Alex Mammone and Zac Anderson hit four singles in a row. Gaudio was thrown out at home plate on Mammone’s single, Drabick scored on Anderson’s single and Mammone scored on a wild pitch.

“We trust each other,” Anderson said. “We trust Jesus Christ, our Lord. He gave us all these skills on the field, so we just gotta trust each other. We came together the whole season. We've been battling and battling, and I feel like today we didn't play our best game, but we fought and we trust in the Lord. … Kyle kept pounding the zone. He didn’t give up many walks. He has been dealing like that all year.”

Mammone, who had two singles, said CVCA “kept battling every at bat.”

“We just played well,” Mammone said. “Our pitching, Kyle dealed on the mound, we got our hits where we needed them and, ultimately, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ helped us out there today.”

Said Drabick: “We knew it was gonna be a really, really close game. We all gave it our all and we fought. Like Zac said, we want to give all thanks to our Lord, Jesus Christ. … Kyle was dominant. Kyle has been like that all year. We trust in him. Yeah, he’s the man.”

CVCA’s Davis, Gaudio and Anderson each hit a single and were hit by a pitch.

Chardon’s Tim Robertson pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts. He allowed six hits, two walks, two runs and hit three batters.

Hoban advances to OHSAA baseball regional final with 10 runs, 11 hits

Hoban loaded the bases on five pitches in the bottom of the first inning against STVM as Grady Falkenstein doubled, Jack Brayer laid down a bunt single and Zachary Karhoff was hit by a pitch.

“We were just trying to attack early and do what we have been doing all year — just get ahead early, let our pitchers pitch and keep doing that every inning,” Falkenstein said.

Colt Andrews followed with a single to score Falkenstein. Ben Rovnak and Brady Wachter worked bases-loaded walks to bring in Brayer and Karhoff, respectively. And Seth Brilmyer lifted a sacrifice fly to plate Andrews.

“I like when our guys jump out early and when we back our guys up,” Rovnak said. “… We play with a lot of energy in long innings.”

Hoban made it 7-0 in the third when Karhoff tripled in Falkenstein and Brayer, and Andrews singled in Karhoff.

“Overall, our team played great,” Brayer said. “We attacked early, did what our coaches told us to do and got the result we wanted.”

The Knights scored three more runs in the fourth when Wachter singled in Karhoff. and Brilmyer singled in Andrews and Rovnak.

“I was able to get pitches I was able to work with,” Brilmyer said. “They weren’t easy, but they were inner third and I was able to turn on every one.”

Andrews went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs. Falkenstein and Wachter had two hits apiece. Karhoff finished with a triple and was hit by two pitches.

“I get on the plate,” Karhoff said. “If they come in, I will take it. If they go outside, I am going to smoke it to that right-center gap.”

STVM’s William Tober pitched 1⅓ innings and Aidan Reynolds pitched the final 2⅔ innings. Matthew Engelhart and Rylan Hurley each hit a single for the Irish.

“The last couple of games we have come out aggressive,” Carmichael said. “We are always trying to score first. When Matthew Ramsey is on the mound, any run support we can get him early lets him cruise and be aggressive. We came out hot again.”

Hoban will take a 13-game win streak into Thursday.

“I don’t think this team has one identity,” Carmichael said. “They really like each other. They are tough kids. They have been through some adversity this year. We have scored in a variety of ways. We have hit triples, we have bunted, we have had big two-out hits and we have stolen bases. We can score a lot of different ways. … It is good pitching, really, really good defense and then timely offense.”
