Cubs vs. D-backs series thread

All D-back fans must feel like they got kicked in the Snyder after the disastrous ninth inning Sunday. Not only that, the local paper has shown so much love for the Cubs and it will be nearly impossible to determine who the home team will be. The boys have to figure out a way to respond against the team with the best record and batting average in the NL. When these teams met in May, Chicago swept. The Cubs will have the luxury of not seeing Haren or Webb. The D-backs miss Dempster and Zambrano, but that doesn't mean it will be an easy series. On Sunday, the Cubs prevented a sweep by the Astros by demolishing them 9-0. They think this is their year. They think every year is and it always proves to not be.

Monday - Harden vs. Johnson

Harden, just acquired from the feeder team known as the Athletics, struck out 10 in under six innings in his first game as a Cub. Harden's ERA is 2.19, but he has yet to pitch past the sixth inning in July. His durability has been suspect in the past few seasons and the D-backs must get his pitch count to his triple digits. Johnson is in quest of win #291 and he has a lifetime 12-0 record against the Cubs, averaging over 10 strikeouts per game. He won his last two starts, hopefully, he can continue his dominance over the Cubs.

Tuesday - Marquis vs. Owings

After some rough interleague outings at home, Marquis defeated the Giants, allowing just two earned runs in 14 innings over the two games. Marquis' ERA on the road is over two runs less than at home, but he walks more batters away from Wrigley. Marquis does not give up the longball much, in 17 starts, the batter left the yard just eight times. Owings has not won a game in almost two months after starting 5-0. He has lost six since his last win. Owings will pitch against the Cubs for the first time ever.

Wednesday - Lilly vs Davis

The Cub southpaw can be expected to go six innings and give up only a few runs. He will be looking to get into double-digits in the win column for the sixth straight season. He defeated Arizona once this season, earning his only career victory over the D-backs. His ERA against the D-backs is just 2.73 in five appearances. In Davis' last start, he wasn't sharp at all, possibly from too many days off. He has on-again, off-again months and July is one of the off-agains, with a 5.29 ERA this month. The D-backs will need him to go longer than the three innings, which was all he could survive in his last start. Maybe Sutt & Gracie's Redhead section can provide some support from the Diamond Level.

For all you scoreboard watchers, the Dodgers will be in Colorado.

Each game is a tough matchup for us. If we can somehow steal a game against Harden, then we should win the series. When Harden is on though, he dominates even the best offenses in baseball.

Some positives going into this series:
*Kerry Wood looks to be unavailable because of a blister.
*Soriano won't be back until after this series.
*Zambrano won't be pitching.

Hopefully we find a way to take the series just so disapointed by the lost last night but lets hope the pitching and offense click togather this series we will need it vs the hard cubs team. But how big would it be to steal game one with Johnson vs Harden probally not going to happen but if it does we take this thing.

Usually upbeat, I see us losing two of three, at minimum.

Johnson, Owings and Davis? 0-3 is very attainable.

Incidentally, after moving to Arizona in 1976, my Arizona Republic subscription has been kept active, following me through five address changes. That's 32 years.

Today, about 10 minutes ago, I cancelled my subscription and told the woman, very calmly, all the mounting reasons why I did it, capped off by the recent slobbering over the Cubs and their fans.

Johnson has never lost to the Cubs apparently and Davis stymies them seemingly every time. This is a different Randy Johnson than the one but he is apparently 12-0 with a sub 2.00 ERA in 13 starts.

As a Cubs fan, I have very tempered hopes for this series and it is an important one with the Cardinals and Brewers coming on fast.

If the Dbacks can avoid their recent "Anyone, Anytime to Hurt Us" theme, winning the series is very real.

Slaten on the DL, D-backs have no left handed relievers. Now don't anyone say that they didn't even when Slaten was healthy. :)

Nice 1-2-3 inning for RJ. Need a win here because the Dodgers are beating Colorado 8-0 in the first.

Looks like BoMel just blew another game for us by pulling a hot starter in favor of a struggling bullpen...just watch
