If former Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Trevor Richards enters Wrigley Field this summer, there’s a chance he’ll do so as a fan.
The Chicago Cubs released Richards from his minor-league contract over the weekend. Richards, 32, posted an ugly 7.27 ERA and walked seven in 8.2 innings at Triple-A Iowa.
Richards showed flashes in spring training, striking out six in five innings of two-run ball. However, he now finds himself a free agent only a week before his 33rd birthday.
Richards split last year between the Blue Jays and Minnesota Twins, recording a 4.55 ERA across 65.1 innings. He owns a 4.50 ERA and 1.9 bWAR since debuting for the Miami Marlins in 2018.

At this point, Richards will likely remain a reliever despite his relative struggles out of the bullpen. Richards posted a 4.74 ERA and -0.9 bWAR for four teams since becoming a full-time reliever during the shortened 2020 season.
Richards came up as a starter and spent most of his first two years in the Marlins’ rotation. Miami moved him to the bullpen during his sophomore season, and he’s kept that role regardless of where he’s pitched.
Richards averaged 71 strikeouts and 28 walks across 60 innings in the last five years. Teams like the Colorado Rockies or Chicago White Sox might be tempted to pursue Richards as a pitcher who can soak innings of the bullpen and potentially draw some semblance of trade interest before the July 31 deadline.
