Friday, the Cubs got an excellent outing from one of their new starting pitcher acquisitions, Kevin Gausman.
Today, they will hope to get another such start from Clay Holmes, who was acquired from the Mets Monday. Holmes was activated from the 60-day injured list and added to the 26-man active roster to make the start against the Royals Saturday evening.
To make room for Holmes on the active roster, Braxton Garrett was optioned to Triple-A Iowa. Garrett was acquired from the Marlins in a deadline deal and had been added to the active roster Thursday, but did not appear in a game. Garrett is coming off Tommy John surgery and has not appeared in a major league game this year. The consensus is that Garrett will compete for a rotation spot in 2027.
The Cubs’ 40-man roster has one open spot, and as always, we await developments.
