The Chicago Cubs could fill their third base hole with a familiar face. In fact, they'd pretty much be repeating a trade pursuit from 2024.

Last season, the Cubs made a move for Tampa Bay Rays All-Star Isaac Paredes, sending back outfielder Christopher Morel, righthanded pitcher Hunter Bigge (Chicago's No. 29 prospect at the time), and righthanded pitcher Ty Johnson in return.

Paredes was then included in the blockbuster trade with the Houston Astros, which sent superstar outfielder Kyle Tucker to Chicago.

During a pre-trade deadline video with Bleacher Report, MLB insider Jon Heyman predicted that the Cubs would end up reacquiring Paredes in 2025.

"The Astros don't like to be a seller. I think they still think they're in their window," Heyman began. "But look at all the offense that they've lost between [Alex] Bregman, obviously before that, [George] Springer, [Carlos] Correa, Yordan [Alvarez] still not hitting like he has [in the past]. He's been out [with injury]."

"So, if they are a seller," the insider continued, "and again, I'm not saying that they are definitely going to be a seller. I'm going to match up Paredes with the Cubs, his old team."

Heyman's entire pitch surrounded Chicago's need at third base, plus the familiarity doesn't hurt. When the Cubs sent Paredes packing this offseason, they did so to acquire a rare talent in Tucker.

Chicago also wanted to see what they had in prospect Matt Shaw. But that starting experiment failed miserably over the first 18 games of the 2025 season.

"Now, they traded [Paredes] quickly, so maybe they don't love him," Heyman acknowledged within the video. "But they liked him at one point, enough to trade for him. And right now, they don't have a [starting-caliber] third baseman."

Heyman also hinted that outside of Nolan Arenado, who would never be traded to the Cubs from the rival St. Louis Cardinals, there aren't too many quality third basemen trending toward being available at the deadline.

That makes a reunion with Paredes (6 HR, 19 RBI, .267 BA) much more realistic.
