Cubs linked to trade for $75 million, 8-1 starting pitcher from AL East originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
If the Chicago Cubs were healthy, they'd have a great rotation of starting pitchers.
They're far from healthy, though, and those injuries are almost certainly going to force the Cubs to take a big swing on a pitching trade before the deadline this summer.
One name that now continues to pop up as someone who will be available, below the rung of the Tarik Skubal level of deal, is Boston Red Sox righty Sonny Gray.
Gray is a veteran who has been there and done that, and with Boston struggling, he'll likely be available.

In a new MLB.com article, Mark Feinsand lists the Cubs as one of three possible fits for Gray, along with the Atlanta Braves and the Milwaukee Brewers.
Particularly if the Brewers would truly be involved here, it could be key for the Cubs to find a way to win a bidding war for a Gray trade.
Gray is good enough that he could swing the NL Central Division race.
"Gray has been one of the few bright spots for the underachieving Red Sox, going 8-1 with a 3.03 ERA in his first 12 starts of the season," Feinsand writes. "The 36-year-old right-hander has a full no-trade clause, but the opportunity to move to a contender could prompt Gray to approve a deal. Gray is in the final year of his three-year, $75 million deal, and while he has a $30 million club option for 2027, he can opt out and become a free agent if the option is exercised."
This most likely would just be a rental for the Cubs, but that's fine. They will hope not to be this injured on the mound again in the future.
But for this season, Gray would definitely be a massive help at Wrigley Field.
